How to structure a winning grants team

Do you often push grants, and particularly grants follow up, to the bottom of your to do list?

Most of us do this.

It can feel uncomfortable to ask for money, and particularly if you haven’t been getting many “yes’s” recently.

So here’s how to make sure that everyone is operating in their zone of brilliance, you are supporting each other, and you are supporting yourself to move forward your grants to dos:

Assign the responsibility areas

ID who can cover each of the grants responsibilities. These responsibilities are:

  • Project management

  • Research

  • Advancement

  • Project design / operations liaison

  • Writing

  • Finance/budget

(While in a large NGO you would likely have a distinct person for each of these roles, in smaller organizations each person can take on multiple roles and you can divide them based on people’s strengths. You could even do this with just 2 people.)

Then, set time expectations

Get clear on how much time they are expected to work on this each week

Finally, block this time on your calendars

Time block this into everyone's calendars and set up work sessions together, otherwise operational urgencies will take over. Trust me, I’ve seen it again and again. Even more so when this is outside your comfort zone.
